Throwdown

I was watching Throwdown with Bobby Flay today when he challenged a woman from Boston to a sticky bun throwdown.  She’s the owner of Flour Bakery and Cafe in the South End. Flour is one of my favorite places in the south end. We go there somewhat frequently, and just last week, we had a… Continue reading Throwdown

JAG

Remember when I said that JAG on the Next Food Network Star had an interesting past? More here.

Pepperoni Stuff

Every family has that one recipe that everyone makes. When you’re having a get-together, it’s usually specified who’s bringing that dish.  In my dad’s family, it’s the pepperoni stuff.  And yes, we really call it that.  My Aunt Dixie came across this recipe years ago, and it’s a staple at any family function. It’s worth… Continue reading Pepperoni Stuff

Cold Wet Weekend

It’s supposed to be cold and wet all weekend. That means it’s going to be a comfort food-making weekend. Chicken stew is certainly on the menu. I think some homemade mac and cheese will be, too. And if I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll make Ina’s Chicken and Dumplings.

Java Junkie

I went out to Beth and Paul’s house yesterday to get Reggie and ended up spending the night. This morning, Beth introduced me to a whole new world, something that had been foreign to me until today. I had my first shot of true espresso. Now, I need to be very careful with my consumption… Continue reading Java Junkie

Apizza Scholls

Tonight I made the trek to Apizza Scholls in Portland. There was a line of people waiting to get in when they opened the doors at 5:00… on a Tuesday night! What can I say? This is arguably the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life. Yeah, it was pretty amazing. Pair it with… Continue reading Apizza Scholls

Maple Bacon

Anthony Bourdain was right about one thing. VooDoo Doughnuts are addictive. I went back this morning for more and had myself a maple bacon doughnut. This sounds gross, but I’ve got to tell you that it was quite amazing.  The saltiness of the bacon brought out the sweetness of the maple. Yeah, Bourdain got this… Continue reading Maple Bacon

Good Cookies

On my flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Alaska Airlines served Cougar Mountain Gourmet Cookies. They were Bananas and Oats cookies, and I must say that they were quite awesome You can order them online, but I’m going to try to find some here in Portland while the opportunity is there.

Roasted Tomato Soup

DSCN0287    Originally uploaded by mikehillwig. Today was Sunday, and I didn’t want to cook up a ton of food since I’m leaving very early Thursday morning. It was a good day to make soup. I opened a few cans of tomatoes and chopped up some fresh roma tomatoes. Then I chopped up an… Continue reading Roasted Tomato Soup

Where Portland Eats

I did a quick Google search for “Portland eats” to see what I could find in terms of food. It led me to whereportlandeats.com. It looks like a good starting point to find some good eats in Portland. Citysearch also led me to Cheap Eats.
