It looks like the comment spam has gotten worse. The captchas should prevent this, but it appears the spammers have software that can defeat this. So I’ve found the setting that will automatically disable comments on an entry after so many days. I’ve set this to five. That means you won’t be able to comment on older entries, and it will also cut down on the amount of spam.
