Ten Words

If you’re a hardcore fan of the West Wing, you know the significance of ten word answers. It’s a debating tool to help summarize your beliefs in a canned statement. Here is mine on the idea that civil unions should be granted to gay couples instead of marriages:

That’s seperate but equal. We tried that before—and failed.

I’m not a fan of civil unions for gay couples instead of marriage. Those are special rights, not equal rights. Civil unions should be the government license for all couples (homo or hetero) for tax purposes and whatnot. Marriage is a religious institution. If the catholic church doesn’t want to allow gay couples to be wed, that’s fine. There are other churches that will allow this.

It comes down to keeping religious doctrine out of the government. Period.
